World Cup 2026: Senegal coach Thiaw provides positive injury update on Kalidou Koulibaly ahead of tournament
Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has expressed optimism over the fitness of captain Kalidou Koulibaly ahead of the Teranga Lions’ opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against France.
Koulibaly’s condition has been a major talking point in the Senegal camp after the experienced defender suffered a thigh injury during training with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal. The injury raised concerns about whether the influential centre-back would be available for one of Senegal’s most important matches of the tournament.
Speaking to reporters, Thiaw revealed that the defender’s recovery is progressing well, although the coaching staff are not rushing to make a definitive announcement regarding his availability.
The Senegal boss explained that the medical department continues to assess Koulibaly on a daily basis and remains in constant communication with the coaching staff as they monitor his rehabilitation.
While stopping short of guaranteeing the defender’s involvement against France, Thiaw struck a positive tone and indicated that there is growing confidence within the camp that the captain could be ready in time for the highly anticipated clash.
“We are monitoring his progress in collaboration with the medical staff. We will communicate on this at the appropriate time, when we have more certainty. But the progress is positive.
We hope he will be ready. I think so and I believe he will be. We have confidence in our medical staff and our physical trainers,” said Thiaw.
Koulibaly remains one of the most important figures in the Senegal squad. His leadership, experience and defensive qualities have made him a cornerstone of the national team for more than a decade. Since inheriting the captain’s armband, the former Napoli star has played a key role in guiding Senegal through some of the most successful periods in the country’s football history.
The prospect of having their skipper available would provide a significant boost for the Teranga Lions as they prepare to face one of the tournament favourites. Senegal will be eager to start their World Cup campaign strongly, and Koulibaly’s presence could prove crucial against a French attack packed with quality and international experience.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his fitness, the mood within the Senegal camp appears positive. Thiaw’s comments suggest that the defender is making encouraging progress and that the medical team remains confident about his chances of returning to full fitness.
Thiaw also praised the work being done behind the scenes by the team’s doctors and fitness staff, highlighting their efforts to ensure players are in the best possible condition for the tournament.
With the World Cup now underway and anticipation building ahead of Senegal’s opening fixture, supporters will be hoping Koulibaly can complete his recovery and lead the team onto the pitch against France. His return would not only strengthen Senegal defensively but also provide a major psychological lift as the African giants seek to make a strong impression on football’s biggest stage.
For now, Senegal continue to monitor the situation closely, with a final decision on Koulibaly’s availability expected once the medical staff are fully satisfied with his recovery. The signs, however, appear increasingly encouraging for the Teranga Lions captain.
