World Cup 2026: Ramy Bensebaïni admits Algeria were punished by Argentina’s quality
Algeria defender Ramy Bensebaïni has acknowledged that his side were unable to cope with Argentina’s quality and efficiency after the Fennecs suffered a 3-0 defeat in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced defender offered an honest assessment of Algeria’s performance, admitting that the team’s tactical approach was disrupted by an Argentine side led by Lionel Messi and capable of controlling key moments of the contest.
Algeria entered the match hoping to unsettle the reigning world champions through aggressive pressing and a high defensive line. However, the plan proved difficult to execute against opponents renowned for their technical ability and composure in possession.
“We knew it was going to be a difficult match. We tried to play with a high block, to press them, but it was Argentina. They were strong, with clean ball distribution,” he explained.
Argentina’s ability to move the ball quickly and exploit space prevented Algeria from imposing their preferred style for long periods of the match.
Despite the final scoreline, Bensebaïni felt there was a spell after half-time when Algeria attempted to regain momentum and put pressure on their opponents.
“In the second half, we managed to get back into the game. But in trying to push forward, we left gaps, and they took advantage of them. When we woke up, it was already too late,” he lamented.
As Algeria searched for a route back into the contest, Argentina capitalised on the additional space available, extending their advantage and effectively ending the match as a competitive contest.
Bensebaïni also addressed one of the key moments of the game, particularly the opening goal involving teammate Aïssa Mandi.
“I didn’t notice if there was a foul on Aïssa Mandi during the first goal. We’re going to review the videos and correct our mistakes,” he stated cautiously.
While the result represented a disappointing start to Algeria’s World Cup campaign, the defender insisted that qualification hopes remain alive.
“There is still hope with two matches left to play. We will do everything we can to get a positive result,” he asserted, calling for a collective effort.
Algeria now face a crucial period in the tournament, with the remaining group-stage matches likely to determine whether they can recover from their opening setback.
Before ending his remarks, Bensebaïni also delivered a message to supporters who had travelled to back the national team or followed the match from home.
“We thank the Algerian fans for their unwavering support and we apologize for tonight’s result. We hope to win the next matches,” he concluded.
The defender’s comments reflected both the disappointment of the defeat and the belief within the squad that there is still time to turn their World Cup campaign around.
