Senegal have dismissed head coach Pape Thiaw following the national team’s disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, with attention now turning to the financial implications of his departure after the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) confirmed it had begun the process of ending his tenure.

The decision was announced shortly after an emergency meeting of the federation’s executive committee, bringing an end to Thiaw’s spell in charge after Senegal’s last-16 exit at the tournament.

Although the federation has confirmed the dismissal, uncertainty remains over the amount of compensation that could be owed, as details of the coach’s most recent contract have not been made public.

FSF confirms decision to part ways with Pape Thiaw

The Senegalese Football Federation announced the move in an official statement released through its social media channels.

“The Senegalese Football Federation informs the public that following the meeting of the executive committee held this Saturday, July 11, 2026, it was decided to initiate a procedure to terminate the duties of the national coach, Mr. Pape Thiaw, as well as his entire technical staff.”

The announcement followed Senegal’s elimination from the World Cup after a tournament that began with high expectations but ultimately ended in disappointment.

The Lions of Teranga lost their opening two group matches against France (3-1) and Norway (3-2) before keeping their campaign alive with a commanding 5-0 victory over Iraq, a result that allowed them to progress as one of the best third-placed teams.

However, their run came to an end in the Round of 16 after Belgium overturned a two-goal deficit late in the match to claim a dramatic 3-2 victory.

The defeat proved decisive, with the federation moving quickly to make changes to the national team’s technical leadership.

Tactical decisions came under scrutiny

Throughout the tournament, Thiaw faced criticism over several coaching decisions.

Selection and substitutions questioned

Among the most debated choices was the decision to start captain Kalidou Koulibaly despite the defender having recently returned from a lengthy injury absence.

Koulibaly was criticised after the defeat to Norway, where he was considered at fault for the goals conceded.

Questions were also raised over Thiaw’s decision to substitute midfielder Pape Gueye during the defeat to Belgium despite the player’s strong performance.

According to the original report, the decision caused frustration, with Gueye later announcing he would take a break from international football while Thiaw remained in charge.

Those moments added to growing pressure on the coach as Senegal’s World Cup campaign came to an early conclusion.

Contract details leave compensation unclear

While the dismissal has now been confirmed, the financial consequences remain uncertain.

Thiaw became Senegal’s head coach in October 2024 after succeeding Aliou Cissé, having previously served as his assistant.

According to the report, the coach had been working without a contract or salary since February 2026 before eventually signing a new agreement only hours before Senegal’s World Cup match against Norway on 23 June.

The report also states that, according to the BBC, his annual salary increased from €230,000 to €500,000 following the renewal.

However, the duration of that agreement has not been disclosed publicly.

Because the contract length remains unknown, it is unclear what level of compensation, if any, Thiaw may receive following his dismissal.

The original report suggests that if the agreement extended until the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, compensation could potentially reach €500,000, although no official figure has been confirmed.

Federation to explain its decision

The FSF has indicated that further details will be provided shortly.

Press conference scheduled

Federation president Abdoulaye Fall is expected to hold a press conference on Monday to explain the reasons behind the decision, review Senegal’s World Cup campaign and discuss the future direction of the national team.

For now, the federation has confirmed only that the dismissal process has begun, while questions surrounding Thiaw’s contract and any possible severance remain unresolved.
