Owen Da Gama backs Evidence Makgopa to lead South Africa attack

Former Bafana Bafana coach Owen Da Gama has backed Orlando Pirates striker Evidence Makgopa to spearhead South Africa’s attack in their crucial 2026 World Cup clash against South Korea.

The Bafana Bafana head into the must-win fixture knowing that anything short of victory could seriously damage their chances of progressing to the knockout stages. South Africa currently sit fourth in Group A with just a single point, while South Korea occupy second place on three points, making the clash a decisive one in the race for qualification.

Da Gama is convinced Makgopa’s physical presence and aerial ability could give Bafana the edge against the Asian side, who have impressed with their pace and organisation in the tournament.

“I’m hoping next game, they can play Makgopa because of his height. I’ve always spoken about combinations of players from the same club like Sundowns and Pirates,” Da Gama said on Radio 2000.

Makgopa, who has been a key figure for Orlando Pirates, is viewed as a striker capable of unsettling defences with his strength, movement, and ability to hold up play — attributes Da Gama believes are essential for breaking down South Korea’s disciplined backline.

The former coach also stressed the importance of tactical cohesion and familiarity within the squad, suggesting that combinations built at club level could be crucial on the international stage.

Bafana will need a disciplined and clinical performance if they are to keep their World Cup hopes alive, with pressure mounting after a difficult start to their group campaign.

Kick-off for the encounter is scheduled for 3am South African time, with the nation expected to stay up in anticipation of a potentially defining moment in their tournament journey.
