World Cup 2026: No start for Lamine Yamal as Spain ease star into Cape Verde clash
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has moved to calm expectations around teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, confirming the winger will not be in the starting XI for Spain’s World Cup opener against Cape Verde, despite being fit and available.
The 18-year-old, who only recently returned from a thigh injury, has been declared medically ready but will be eased back into action from the bench as Spain begin their campaign in Atlanta.
Yamal fit but carefully managed
De la Fuente stressed that Yamal’s recovery has gone well and that the Barcelona prodigy is fully integrated into the squad’s preparations.
“The best news is that Lamine is in great shape, he has prepared very well and is training very well, just like Nico (Williams) and Víctor (Muñoz). He is available, even if he won’t start the match, we’ll see how the game unfolds,” he said.
The Spain boss added that the youngster could still feature at some point during the match, but only in a controlled role after a long spell on the sidelines.
“He is ready to play tomorrow without any problem. Not for 90 minutes, but to come on at some point, he is in perfect condition to play a few minutes. If that weren’t the case, he wouldn’t even be on the bench,” he explained.
Yamal has not played competitively since April 22, and Spain are keen to manage his return carefully rather than rush him into a starting role in a major tournament opener.
Spain refuse favourites tag
De la Fuente also brushed aside suggestions that Spain are clear favourites for the tournament, insisting the global competition is more open than ever.
“What does that mean in sports? It puts you among the potential contenders, but only one can win… I value it because it pays tribute to the exceptional journey of some players. I had never seen a World Cup with so many real contenders to win it,” he said.
However, he did underline Spain’s strength in one key area, describing La Roja’s midfield as the strongest in world football, a statement that reflects the depth and balance within the squad.
Confidence building ahead of opener
Spain begin their World Cup journey on Monday in Atlanta against Cape Verde, with the squad focused on starting strongly in what is expected to be a demanding group stage.
Midfielder Álex Baena highlighted the importance of a positive opening performance, stressing both mental and tactical readiness.
“The first match helps build confidence. It’s important mentally; since the tournament is very long, it’s good to gain confidence,” he said.
Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino, who has returned to full fitness after a foot injury that disrupted the second half of his season, echoed those sentiments.
“The players are very motivated and, physically, we have prepared very well. We have arrived in the best possible condition, but the most important thing in these tournaments is the mental aspect,” he noted.
