Carlo Ancelotti expects Neymar to return for Scotland clash

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti says Neymar is expected to be available for the Seleção’s final Group C match against Scotland after making progress in his recovery from injury.

The encouraging update came after Brazil’s 3-0 victory over Haiti on Friday, a result that moved the South American side to the top of Group C at the 2026 World Cup.

Neymar has not played since missing Santos FC’s match on 17 May due to a calf strain, but Ancelotti expressed confidence that the forward is close to returning to full fitness.

Speaking after the win over Haiti, the Italian coach outlined the next steps in Neymar’s recovery programme and indicated that the Brazil star should be ready for the meeting with Scotland.

“Neymar will train individually tomorrow and on Monday he will join the group. He will be available for the match against Scotland,” the coach assured in a press conference.

The potential return of Neymar would provide another boost for Brazil as they seek to secure top spot in the group.

Despite dealing with several injury setbacks during the qualifying campaign, the Brazilian forward remained influential when available, contributing two goals and three assists in four appearances.

Ancelotti also discussed the performance of Matheus Cunha, who scored twice in the victory over Haiti after leading the attack in place of Igor Thiago.

Although the striker impressed with his finishing and movement, the Brazil coach stopped short of confirming whether he would retain his place in the starting line-up for the next match.

“It’s a possibility. His position today was ideal for putting the opposing defense in difficulty. He managed his movements and passes very well, which allowed him to be effective,” explained Ancelotti.

The Italian made it clear that he does not want his team to become predictable and is prepared to make tactical adjustments when necessary.

“That could be an option. We talked about it yesterday, but I don’t want a fixed identity. Maybe we’ll change that in the next game,” he added.

Brazil currently lead Group C with four points, ahead of Morocco on goal difference. Scotland sit third with three points following their defeat to Morocco.

However, Ancelotti insisted his focus remains firmly on Brazil’s own performance rather than the qualification prospects of their opponents.

“We are not thinking about eliminating Scotland. Our goal is to play well and continue to progress. Finishing first in the group would be important for the future,” he stated.

The coach also warned that Scotland would provide a difficult challenge despite their current position in the standings.

“Scotland has quality and showed today against Morocco that it can cause problems. We must remain focused, calm and continue to work to improve,” Ancelotti concluded.
