World Cup 2026: ‘My heart chose Morocco’ – Ayyoub Bouaddi has no regrets over France snub
Morocco midfield sensation Ayyoub Bouaddi insists he has no regrets about turning his back on France, declaring he is proud to wear the Atlas Lions shirt after an impressive breakthrough campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 18-year-old emerged as one of Morocco’s standout performers during the tournament, cementing his place in Mohamed Ouahbi’s side despite previously representing France at every youth level.
Bouaddi’s international future had long appeared destined to lie with Les Bleus. Born in France to Moroccan parents, he made 27 appearances for France’s youth teams and even captained the Under-21 side, placing him among the country’s brightest prospects.
France uncertainty opened the door
However, the Lille midfielder eventually opted to switch allegiance after failing to receive guarantees from France head coach Didier Deschamps over a place in the senior national team ahead of the World Cup.
Morocco officially confirmed his international switch a month before the tournament, handing Ouahbi one of Europe’s most highly rated young midfielders.
The teenager says the decision was driven entirely by emotion rather than opportunity.
“No regrets whatsoever,” Bouaddi said after the defeat when asked about his decision.
“I’m really proud that I chose Morocco.”
World Cup breakthrough confirms decision
Bouaddi justified Morocco’s faith by featuring in all five of the team’s World Cup matches, playing a key role in another memorable run by the Atlas Lions.
His performances also secured him a place in the history books, becoming the second-youngest player ever to appear in a World Cup quarter-final, behind only Brazilian legend Pelé.
Although Morocco’s campaign ended in disappointment, the midfielder believes the experience will only strengthen the team heading into future tournaments.
“Whatever happens we will always play for our jersey.
“We want to make sure that the Moroccan people are proud of us, and we know what we’ll have to do next time to advance even more.”
The tournament has firmly established Bouaddi as one of Morocco’s brightest young talents, with his mature displays suggesting the Atlas Lions have secured a midfielder capable of becoming a cornerstone of the national team for years to come.
