Former Egypt international Ahmed Hossam Mido has praised Morocco following their dramatic World Cup Round of 32 victory over the Netherlands, highlighting the team’s mentality, unity, and strong sense of identity.

The Atlas Lions came from behind to draw 1-1 before going on to defeat the Dutch 3-2 on penalties, sealing their place in the Round of 16 and continuing their impressive run on the global stage.

“The Moroccan national team is a team that makes us proud,” Mido said in media remarks.

“The average age of the squad is 26, and coach Mohamed Ouahbi brought on three players under the age of 21 despite being behind against the Netherlands.”

Control against European giants

Mido also praised Morocco’s tactical approach during the match, particularly their ability to dominate possession against one of Europe’s most established football nations.

“Morocco played a great football battle and controlled possession,” he said.

“The Netherlands are a historic football nation and one of the pioneers of total football.”

“To have 70% possession against the Netherlands is a major achievement.”

The performance underlined Morocco’s growing confidence on the world stage as they continue to build on their historic run in recent tournaments.

Faith, family and team spirit highlighted

Beyond the football, Mido pointed to what he described as Morocco’s strong internal bond and shared values, which he believes play a key role in their success.

He also praised them for remaining connected to their religion and their mothers despite spending much of their careers in Europe.

“What I really like is the bond between the players,” he said.

“Despite playing in Europe, whenever they are asked a question, their answer is always that they are Muslims and that their religion is based on the group, not individuals.”

“They work for the team and are very connected to their mothers. You always see each player thinking first about going to his mother.”

Morocco’s momentum continues

Morocco’s unity has been widely credited as one of the defining strengths behind their recent performances, with their togetherness translating into resilience on the pitch.

The Atlas Lions will now turn their attention to the next stage of their World Cup campaign, where they face Canada in the Round of 16 on Saturday, aiming to extend their historic run even further.
