World Cup 2026: Kylian Mbappé’s historic brace sinks spirited Senegal

France defeated Senegal 3-1 at the New York New Jersey Stadium to secure their first three points of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group I campaign.

The opening 45 minutes told a completely different story from the final scoreline, as the African giants completely suffocated the French midfield and dictated the tempo. Senegal looked by far the sharper side, exploiting spaces out wide and threatening to pull off a major tournament upset.

The Teranga Lions came agonizingly close to breaking the deadlock when Nicolas Jackson rattled the woodwork with a fierce effort, while Ismaïla Sarr wasted a glaring opportunity from close range. France, sluggish and uninspired, lucky to retreat into the locker room at halftime with the game still locked at 0-0.

Mbappé Takes Charge and Makes History

The second half witnessed a tactical shift as Didier Deschamps urged his team to play with higher intensity. The pressure paid off in the 66th minute when Michael Olise sliced open the Senegalese defense with a perfectly weighted pass, allowing Kylian Mbappé to slot the ball home.

This goal was a monumental milestone, making Mbappé France’s all-time leading goalscorer with 57 goals, surpassing Olivier Giroud. Senegal attempted to mount a comeback, but France struck again in the 82nd minute.

Substitute Bradley Barcola showed immense composure after entering the pitch, beautifully chipping the ball over an advancing Édouard Mendy to double the advantage and seemingly put the game out of reach.

A Frantic and Unforgettable Finish

Just when the match seemed to be winding down, a frantic stoppage-time period injected late drama into the stadium.

In the 95th minute, 18-year-old sensation Ibrahim Mbaye capitalised on a rare defensive lapse from Les Bleus to fire a brilliant consolation goal into the net, briefly giving Senegal a lifeline. However, any hopes of a miracle comeback were instantly erased a mere 60 seconds later.

Right from the ensuing kickoff, Mbappé gathered the ball and unleashed a spectacular, venomous long-range rocket that flew straight into the top corner.

The stunning strike sealed his brace, matching Lionel Messi’s career tally of 13 World Cup goals, and firmly locked in the hard-fought 3-1 victory for the tournament favorites.
