Karlsruher striker Louey Ben Farhat turns down Tunisia call up

Karlsruher striker Louey Ben Farhat has explained his decision to turn down Tunisia call up for the upcoming 2026 World Cup tournament.

The 19-year-old attacker had reportedly caused frustration for head coach Sabri Lamouchi, who publicly expressed disappointment after the player declined invitation for international duty.

However, Ben Farhat has now broken his silence to explain the reasoning behind his withdrawal from the squad, stressing that he maintains full respect for the national team and its technical staff.

The forward was adamant that his decision should not be interpreted as rejection of his country, but rather as a necessary step in managing his physical condition following a difficult season marked by injury.

“This decision was very difficult for me to make,” he said. “I have enormous respect for the national team, the coaching staff and everyone who works for Tunisian football. My decision in no way reflects a lack of respect towards them.”

Ben Farhat went on to explain that the key factor behind his choice was his recovery from a serious injury sustained earlier in the season. The striker spent four months on the sidelines after suffering a broken foot, a setback that significantly disrupted his campaign at club level.

Having only recently returned to full fitness, he believes that immediately stepping into the demands of international tournament football would have placed unnecessary strain on his body at a critical stage of rehabilitation.

“This season, I was sidelined for four months due to a broken foot,” he added. “After such a serious injury, taking part in a World Cup, with all the physical demands and preparation that entails, would have been a huge burden. At that point, I felt it was better to prioritise my recovery and make this decision in the interests of my fitness and my future.”

His comments highlight the difficult balance many young players face between national team ambition and long-term career management, particularly following significant injuries.

While the absence of a promising attacking option is a setback for Tunisia, Ben Farhat’s explanation offers context to a decision that initially sparked frustration within the national team setup.

For Lamouchi and the coaching staff, the focus will now shift toward alternative attacking solutions as the Eagles of Carthage continue preparations for upcoming international competitions.

Meanwhile, Ben Farhat will remain with Karlsruher SC as he works to regain full match sharpness and consistency following a disrupted season, with the striker prioritising long-term fitness as he looks to re-establish himself at both club and international level in the future.
