John Terry tips Mbekezeli Mbokazi to attain greater heights

Former England and Chelsea captain John Terry believes South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has all the qualities needed to become a world-class player, backing the youngster to emerge as one of the standout defenders at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Terry has heaped praise on Mbokazi ahead of South Africa’s opening World Cup clash against Mexico, describing the Bafana Bafana defender as one of the brightest young talents in world football.

The former Chelsea and England star said he has been impressed not only by Mbokazi’s abilities on the pitch but also by his mentality and attitude, qualities he believes are essential for success at the highest level.

“I think he is a top player,” Terry said during an interview organised by SuperSport TV for the media on Wednesday.

“I think he’s actually got the potential to be one of the big stars among the defenders and young players coming through, and that can be really positive for the team.

“I really like him. I like his attitude and the mentality side of things that I see. So I’m excited to see him against some bigger and better opposition throughout this tournament.”

Mbokazi heads into the tournament carrying significant expectations after establishing himself as one of South Africa’s most promising defensive talents. His performances will be closely watched as Bafana Bafana seek to make a strong start to their World Cup campaign.

South Africa face Mexico in the opening match of the tournament at the iconic Estadio Azteca, with kick-off scheduled for 9pm South African time.

For Mbokazi, the encounter will provide the perfect stage to showcase the qualities that have earned such glowing praise from one of football’s most respected defenders.
