World Cup 2026: Ghana fans turned away after ticket chaos outside Philadelphia Stadium

What was meant to be a night of global football celebration turned into frustration for hundreds of Ghana supporters, many of whom had flown in from Accra expecting to witness their team’s World Cup clash at Lincoln Financial Field.

Instead, large sections of the travelling support were left outside the venue on Saturday night’s game against Croatia, unable to gain entry despite arriving ahead of kick-off.

Groups of fans gathered around the stadium perimeter, uncertain about why their tickets were not being honoured and where the breakdown had occurred.

Confusion quickly spread among those stranded outside the gates. Some believed that access passes were supposed to be distributed on-site by a member of the official supporters’ network, while others suggested the tickets allocated to the group may have been redirected into secondary resale channels.

One supporter, speaking to The Athletic, said they suspected tickets originally promised to fans waiting outside had already been sold on the resale market, deepening frustration among those left without entry.

Security presence increases as tensions rise

As kick-off approached, police presence at the stadium entrance intensified, eventually doubling and then tripling as officials moved to manage the growing crowd. Officers described their deployment as a precautionary security measure.

Most supporters remained composed, standing in groups, checking phones, and attempting to make contact with organisers or alternative ticket holders. However, isolated confrontations between frustrated fans and police added tension to an already uncertain situation.

Despite continued expectation that tickets might eventually arrive, none materialised. Approximately 30 minutes after the match began, authorities cleared the area entirely, directing supporters away from the gates and towards nearby parking zones.

Match unfolds inside as Ghana progress on the pitch

While scenes of disappointment played out outside, the match itself carried major implications inside the stadium. Croatia national football team secured a 2-1 victory over Ghana national football team, sealing second place in Group L, while Ghana advanced in third.

The contest in Philadelphia had swung between both sides. Petar Sučić opened the scoring with a long-range strike, before Ghana briefly believed they had equalised through Derrick Luckassen, only for VAR to confirm the goal after review due to an offside phase in the build-up. Nikola Vlašić later restored Croatia’s lead with a late header to settle the result.
