World Cup 2026: Germany favoured as Ivory Coast seek to make their mark in Group E
Group E of the 2026 FIFA World Cup brings together a blend of established pedigree, emerging ambition and historic opportunity, with Germany, Ivory Coast, Ecuador and Curaçao all aiming to secure a place in the knockout stage.
While Germany enter the group as clear favourites, the battle for the remaining qualification positions promises to be fiercely contested. Ivory Coast and Ecuador both believe they have the quality to progress, while Curaçao prepare for a landmark first appearance on football’s biggest stage.
Germany Carry the Weight of Expectation
Germany arrive at the tournament with one of the richest histories in World Cup football. The four-time world champions are preparing for their 21st appearance in the finals and have qualified for every edition since 1954.
Although Germany lifted the trophy most recently in 2014, their last two campaigns ended in disappointment, with group-stage eliminations in both 2018 and 2022.
Under Julian Nagelsmann, however, optimism has returned. With talents such as Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz in the squad, Germany are widely viewed as the strongest team in Group E and the leading candidates to finish top.
Yet memories of recent setbacks serve as a reminder that qualification cannot be taken for granted.
Ivory Coast and Ecuador Target Knockout Stage
The race for second place appears likely to centre on Ivory Coast and Ecuador.
The Elephants return to the World Cup after missing the previous two editions and will be making their fourth appearance in the tournament. Led by Emerse Faé, the African champions arrive with renewed confidence and the ambition of reaching the knockout rounds.
Ivory Coast possess considerable attacking options, including Amad Diallo, Yan Diomandé, Guéla Doué, Simon Adingra and Nicolas Pépé. Their opening match against Ecuador could prove decisive in shaping the group’s final standings.
Ecuador, meanwhile, are participating in their fifth World Cup. The South Americans reached the Round of 16 in 2006 but have not progressed beyond the group stage since then.
Their qualification campaign was impressive, suffering only two defeats in eighteen matches. With a disciplined and competitive squad, Ecuador will view progression to the next round as a realistic objective.
Curaçao Ready for Historic Debut
For Curaçao, simply reaching the World Cup represents a significant achievement.
The Caribbean nation enters the tournament for the first time and will face opponents with far greater experience at international level. Nevertheless, Dick Advocaat’s side can approach the competition with freedom and enthusiasm.
Without the burden of expectation, Curaçao will hope to challenge the established order and create one of the stories of the tournament.
Key Fixtures in Group E
All Group E matches will be played in the United States.
The opening round of fixtures on 14 June sees Germany face Curaçao in Houston, while Ivory Coast meet Ecuador in Philadelphia in a match that could have a major impact on qualification.
Germany then take on Ivory Coast on 20 June in Toronto before Ecuador face Curaçao on 21 June in Kansas City.
The group stage concludes on 25 June, when Curaçao play Ivory Coast in Philadelphia and Ecuador face Germany in New York.
With Germany expected to lead the group and the remaining three teams eager to make history, Group E promises intrigue, pressure and a compelling fight for qualification as the World Cup gets underway.
