World Cup 2026: Gabon’s Pierre Atcho to lead all-African crew for Iraq vs Norway clash

FIFA has finalized its refereeing assignments for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup group-stage fixtures, naming an elite contingent of African match officials to take charge of the opening Group I encounter between Iraq and Norway.

The crucial match is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16, 2026, with a local kickoff time of 18:00 EDT (6:00 PM) at the Boston Stadium (Gillette Stadium) in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Gabonese trio to command the pitch

Gabon’s rising star Pierre Atcho has been selected as the main central referee for the high-profile fixture.

The 33-year-old official, recognized widely for his clinical decision-making during major continental tournaments including the Africa Cup of Nations, solidifies his standing within football’s refereeing elite with this appointment.

Atcho brings substantial international tournament experience to the match, having previously commanded high-stakes games under the Confederation of African Football (CAF) umbrella and during the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Atcho will be directly supported by a familiar, all-Gabonese pair of assistant referees on the sidelines. Boris Ditsoga has been designated as Assistant Referee 1, while Amos Abeigne Ndong will step in as Assistant Referee 2.

This trio frequently operates together in top-tier African club and international competitions, notably managing the intense CAF Confederation Cup final series earlier this year.

Their established chemistry on the pitch is expected to provide precise offside control and strong collaborative management for a fixture featuring heavy global scrutiny.

Egyptian contingent rounds out the crew

To ensure seamless administrative control and technical oversight, FIFA has integrated two of Egypt’s most prominent match officials into the five-man refereeing crew.

Amin Mohamed Omar will serve as the 4th official, managing the technical areas and substitutions. Omar, who splits his professional time between working as a lawyer and an elite FIFA referee, provides deep operational experience.

He is joined by fellow countryman Mahmoud Abouelregal, who has been officially designated as the Reserve Assistant Referee.

A global stage in Boston

The assignment represents a significant milestone for African football arbitration, putting continent-tested officials in control of a game featuring elite global talent like Norway’s Erling Haaland.
