World Cup 2026: France defender Dayot Upamecano warns of Morocco challenge
France defender Dayot Upamecano has praised Morocco’s rapid development ahead of Thursday’s World Cup quarter-final, describing the Atlas Lions as a dangerous side capable of causing problems both in possession and in one-on-one situations.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, the France international said his team was fully aware of the challenge awaiting them as they seek a place in the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup.
Upamecano believes Morocco have continued to grow as an international force and acknowledged the quality that has helped them reach the last eight of the tournament.
“They are a very strong team. They have progressed enormously since 2022,” he said.
France head into the quarter-final after progressing through the previous round, but Upamecano insisted there would be no room for complacency against a Moroccan side that has continued to impress throughout the competition.
The defender highlighted several aspects of Morocco’s game that he believes make them particularly difficult opponents. He pointed to their composure on the ball, attacking quality and ability to create decisive moments in individual duels.
“Morocco is a team that likes to have possession and excels in individual duels. They have also scored a lot of goals,” he explained.
Morocco’s performances have attracted widespread praise during the tournament, with the Atlas Lions once again demonstrating their ability to compete with some of world football’s strongest nations.
Upamecano’s comments reflect the respect within the French camp for a side that currently sits sixth in the FIFA world rankings and has continued to establish itself among the elite on the international stage.
The Bayern Munich defender believes France must deliver a complete performance if they are to overcome Mohammed Ouhabi’s side and extend their World Cup campaign.
According to Upamecano, success will depend on maintaining high standards at both ends of the pitch, with concentration and discipline expected to be crucial throughout the contest.
“We will have to be at our absolute best, both defensively and offensively. We have enormous respect for this team, but our objective is to win this match to continue our journey in this World Cup,” he concluded.
The meeting between France and Morocco promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the quarter-final stage, with both nations aiming to secure a place in the last four.
France will be looking to continue their pursuit of another World Cup title, while Morocco hope to build on their impressive run and move one step closer to another historic achievement on the global stage.
With both teams boasting quality across the pitch, Upamecano’s assessment underlines the level of respect Morocco have earned before what is expected to be a fiercely contested encounter.
