World Cup 2026: Egypt training disrupted by thunderstorm ahead of last-16 clash with Argentina
Egypt’s preparations for their World Cup round-of-16 showdown with Argentina were briefly thrown into disarray on Sunday after a thunderstorm swept across Atlanta, forcing the team to cut short their outdoor training session.
According to a statement from the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), the squad was compelled to move indoors, completing the remainder of their workout in the gym. The pitch session lasted less than an hour as adverse weather conditions made it unsafe to continue outside.
The disruption comes amid a tournament already heavily affected by unpredictable weather, with storms and delays repeatedly interrupting fixtures across several venues.
Despite the setback, Egypt remain focused on a historic challenge. The team reached the last 16 for the first time in their history after edging Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in their previous outing.
Argentina, meanwhile, booked their place in the knockout stage with a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory over Cape Verde.
Egypt’s campaign has been steady and resilient. The seven-time African champions began with a 1-1 draw against Belgium, followed by a convincing 3-1 win over New Zealand, before securing second place in Group G with another 1-1 draw against Iran.
The two sides will meet at Atlanta Stadium on Tuesday, with a place in the quarter-finals on the line.
