Egypt secured a historic place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Australia in a dramatic penalty shootout following a fiercely contested 1-1 draw after extra time.

The Pharaohs held their nerve from the spot to continue their impressive tournament run and keep African hopes alive in the competition.

Australia started brightly and nearly produced an early breakthrough in spectacular fashion inside five minutes. Cristian Volpato connected perfectly with a precise pass before unleashing a powerful strike from distance that crashed against the crossbar.

Egypt gradually settled into the match and took the lead in the 13th minute through Emam Ashour. Karim Hafez delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area and the midfielder burst forward to guide a close-range finish into the bottom left corner.

Egypt survive second-half pressure

The North Africans nearly doubled their advantage immediately after the restart when Mostafa Ziko released Omar Marmoush inside the area, but the forward dragged his effort narrowly wide of the right post.

Australia eventually found their equaliser in unfortunate circumstances for Egypt. A dangerous free kick into the box caused confusion in defence before Mohamed Hany inadvertently headed the ball into his own net in the 55th minute.

The closing stages produced intense drama as Egypt pushed hard for a late winner. Rami Rabia twice came close in stoppage time with powerful headers aimed towards the top corner, but Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach produced two outstanding reflex saves to keep his side level.

Egypt were also handed another huge opportunity in extra time when Omar Marmoush played Mohamed Salah through inside the penalty area, only for the Egyptian captain to send his effort high over the bar.

Pharaohs hold nerve in shootout

The match was eventually decided on penalties, where Egypt showed greater composure under pressure.

Australia suffered an early setback when Harry Souttar fired his penalty over the crossbar before Mahmoud Saber calmly converted for Egypt.

Jackson Irvine and Awer Mabil both scored for Australia, while Rami Rabia and Mohamed Salah responded confidently for the Pharaohs.

Australia’s hopes faded further when Lucas Herrington failed to convert his penalty, leaving Hossam Abdelmaguid to seal victory for Egypt with the decisive kick.

The win sends Egypt into the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the clash between Cape Verde and Argentina as the Pharaohs continue their pursuit of more World Cup history.
