World Cup 2026: Canada coach Jesse Marsch praises Morocco ahead of Round of 16 clash
Canada head coach Jesse Marsch has described Morocco as a “well-organised” and highly talented side as his team prepares to face the Atlas Lions in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference in Houston on Friday, Marsch acknowledged the scale of the challenge awaiting his players, highlighting Morocco’s tactical discipline and the individual quality within the squad ahead of the knockout encounter.
The Canadian coach said Morocco have developed into an exceptionally structured team capable of adapting to different situations during matches while making the most of their players’ strengths.
According to Marsch, the Atlas Lions’ tactical organisation has been one of the standout features of their performances throughout the tournament.
He also pointed to the confidence Morocco have gained from their recent results, explaining that he observed their mentality closely during their previous match against the Netherlands in Monterrey.
“Their level of confidence and the boldness with which they approached this match particularly caught my attention,” he said.
Despite the quality of the opposition, Marsch expressed belief in his own squad, insisting Canada are fully aware of what will be required to compete against one of the tournament’s strongest teams.
He said his players understand the significance of the occasion and are preparing to produce a performance capable of matching Morocco in every area of the game.
Canada defender Alistair Johnston also shared his thoughts before the fixture, drawing on his previous experience of facing Morocco at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Johnston warned his teammates about the atmosphere they can expect, pointing to the passionate support the Atlas Lions consistently receive during major international tournaments.
The defender also described the current Canadian national team as being in one of the most encouraging periods in its history and viewed the upcoming encounter as an opportunity to test themselves against one of world football’s leading nations.
He characterised the match as an exciting challenge against what he described as “a true giant of world football.”
With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, both teams will head into the Round of 16 knowing the significance of the occasion, while Canada hope to overcome a Moroccan side that continues to earn praise for its organisation, confidence and consistent performances on the global stage.
