World Cup 2026: Argentina vs Egypt – Preview, analysis and kick-off time

Egypt will look to continue their historic 2026 FIFA World Cup run when they face defending champions Argentina in a high-profile Round of 16 clash at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Tuesday evening.

The encounter will place African football’s hopes on the shoulders of Mohamed Salah as the Pharaohs attempt to overcome a formidable Argentina side inspired by Lionel Messi.

Argentina may still be favourites to progress, but their narrow escape against Cape Verde in the previous round has offered Egypt encouragement ahead of one of the biggest matches in the nation’s football history.

Argentina searching for another title charge

The reigning world champions have not looked entirely convincing during the knockout phase despite maintaining an impressive winning run.

Lionel Scaloni’s men required extra time to defeat Cape Verde 3-2 in the last round, exposing vulnerabilities rarely associated with the South American giants in recent years.

Yet Argentina continue to deliver results when it matters most. They have now won 11 consecutive matches, strengthening belief that they can become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup crown.

History also heavily favours La Albiceleste. Only one defending champion has previously failed at this stage of the competition, while Argentina have won each of their last 24 matches played on neutral ground.

The South Americans also possess an imposing record against African opposition at the World Cup, having won eight straight matches against teams from the continent.

Egypt carrying Africa’s hopes

Egypt’s campaign has already become a landmark moment for African football.

The Pharaohs secured their first-ever World Cup knockout victory after defeating Australia on penalties, keeping alive hopes of becoming just the fifth African nation to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Coach Hossam Hassan has built a disciplined side capable of frustrating elite opponents, with Egypt losing only once in their last eight international matches.

Three of Egypt’s four matches at this World Cup have finished level after 90 minutes, highlighting the team’s resilience and defensive organisation.

However, the statistics underline the scale of the challenge awaiting the North Africans. Egypt have managed only one victory against South American opposition from the CONMEBOL federation in their history, alongside three draws and 12 defeats.

Even so, the presence of Salah and the momentum created by their historic run ensures belief remains high among Egyptian supporters and football fans across Africa.

Team news and tactical outlook

Argentina will assess the condition of left-back Facundo Medina after he suffered an injury concern against Cape Verde, while midfielder Nico Gonzalez is also doubtful.

Nicolas Tagliafico is expected to step into the starting line-up should Medina fail to recover, with Scaloni otherwise unlikely to make major changes.

Egypt have welcomed back Mohanad Lasheen after suspension, although Karim Hafez remains a doubt following the injury he picked up against Australia.

If Hafez is unavailable, Ramy Rabia could shift to left-back, allowing Hamdi Fathy to slot into the defensive line as Egypt prepare for sustained Argentine pressure.

Kick-off time

The Round of 16 meeting between Argentina national football team and Egypt national football team will take place on Tuesday, July 7, with kick-off scheduled for 16:00 GMT in Atlanta.
