World Cup 2026: Amad Diallo declares Ivory Coast’s history-making ambition after heroics against Ecuador
Amad Diallo has revealed that Ivory Coast arrived at the 2026 FIFA World Cup determined to make history after his dramatic late winner secured a memorable 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their opening Group E match.
The Manchester United winger emerged as the hero in Philadelphia, coming off the bench to score in the 90th minute and hand the Elephants all three points in their first World Cup match since returning to the global stage after a 12-year absence. His decisive strike also ended Ecuador’s long unbeaten run and gave Ivory Coast their first World Cup victory since 2014.
With the game seemingly heading for a draw, defender Wilfried Singo surged forward down the right flank before delivering a perfect cross into the penalty area. Diallo reacted quickest, firing a first-time effort beyond Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez to spark wild celebrations among the Ivorian players and supporters.
The goal further cemented Diallo’s growing reputation as one of Africa’s brightest young talents. According to reports, the winger also became Ivory Coast’s youngest-ever scorer at a FIFA World Cup after producing the decisive moment on the biggest stage.
Speaking after the match, Diallo made it clear that Ivory Coast’s ambitions extend far beyond simply participating in the tournament.
“Absolutely. (We came here to make) history (for all) of us and we were [proud/happy after our result] against France, we (got the) victory) There are two of (matches/games left) to win.”
His comments reflected the growing confidence within the Ivory Coast camp. Coach Emerse Fae’s youthful side has impressed in recent months, recording notable victories in friendly matches before carrying that momentum into the World Cup. Faé himself praised his team’s determination and ambition following the win over Ecuador.
The match was far from straightforward. Ecuador started brightly and struck the crossbar twice in the opening half through John Yeboah and Alan Minda. Ivory Coast also came close when Elye Wahi rattled the woodwork after the break. As the game wore on, however, the African champions gradually took control before Diallo’s late intervention settled the contest.
The victory gives Ivory Coast an ideal start in Group E and keeps alive their dream of reaching the World Cup knockout stages for the first time in the nation’s history. Attention now turns to a huge clash against four-time world champions Germany, with Diallo and his teammates believing they can continue writing a remarkable chapter in Ivorian football history.
