World Cup 2026: Algerian teenager assaulted at Morocco vs Netherlands World Cup fan zone
An investigation has been launched in the United States after a 14-year-old Algerian supporter was violently attacked at a World Cup fan zone in Boston during Morocco’s Round of 32 match against the Netherlands.
The incident has sparked widespread anger across Algerian communities and among football supporters on social media, with many calling for those responsible to face justice.
According to Algerian media reports, including Echorouk, the teenager, identified as Wassim, was attending the public viewing area wearing an Algeria national team shirt while supporting Morocco during the match, which the Atlas Lions eventually won on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Reports said tensions escalated after the Netherlands took the lead, with videos widely circulated online appearing to show the teenager being assaulted by a large group of supporters before collapsing and losing consciousness.
He was later taken to hospital for treatment.
Condemnation across African football supporters
The attack drew strong reactions from Algerian supporters in the United States and Canada, particularly as Algeria prepared for its World Cup meeting with Switzerland in Vancouver.
Many Algerian and Moroccan fans also condemned the violence online and expressed support for the teenager and his family.
According to La Gazette du Fennec, American authorities have opened legal proceedings against individuals suspected of involvement in the attack, while the Algerian consul in New York has reportedly filed an official complaint to follow the case.
Algerian president confirms diplomatic follow-up
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said the country’s embassy was working closely with American authorities to ensure the case is fully investigated.
“Our embassy is doing everything necessary and is following up on all judicial procedures with the American justice system and authorities,” he said.
Reports indicated that surveillance cameras helped investigators identify around 35 suspects connected to the incident, with those found guilty potentially facing severe prison sentences under US law.
Authorities have not yet confirmed any arrests.
Family says teenager remains under medical supervision
Algerian diplomatic officials later visited Wassim following the incident, while President Tebboune confirmed the teenager had left hospital.
The Algerian Sports Minister, Walid Sadi, is also said to be monitoring the situation closely and has invited the teenager to attend Algeria’s World Cup match against Switzerland as a gesture of support.
Speaking to Algerian newspaper Al-Shorouk, Wassim’s uncle said the teenager was no longer in immediate danger but remained under medical supervision.
He added that the Algerian embassy in Washington had contacted the family directly and that the boy’s father had begun legal proceedings.
The uncle also dismissed rumours circulating online that suspects had already been arrested, insisting investigations were still ongoing.
He further rejected claims suggesting the footage was old or that the incident had taken place outside the United States, describing the case as real and subject to active diplomatic and judicial follow-up.
