Achraf Hakimi Joins Morocco National Team After PSG Triumph

Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi officially carved his name into footballing history during the Atlas Lions’ crucial Group C clash against Scotland at Gillette Stadium. 

By taking the field on Friday night, the Paris Saint-Germain star earned his 12th career World Cup appearance, surpassing Cameroon’s François Omam-Biyik and Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan to become the most-capped African player in tournament history.

Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi kept total faith in the starting eleven that fought hard to earn a tactical draw against global heavyweights Brazil.

Hakimi Breaks Long-Standing African Record

Hakimi’s inclusion in Friday’s starting lineup pushed him past the benchmark of 11 World Cup matches, which had been jointly held by Omam-Biyik and Gyan. The historic 12th cap is a direct culmination of his longevity at the highest level of international football. 

 initially debuted on the global stage with three appearances during the 2018 World Cup in Russia. 

He then played every single minute of Morocco’s groundbreaking seven-match run to the semi-finals at Qatar 2022, before finally cementing his standalone continental record right here in North America.
