In the fourth edition of the Women’s Under-17 World Cup held in Costa Rica, Ghana and Nigeria, the last African representatives, faced elimination in the quarter-finals.
Ghana’s fate was sealed after a tense match against Italy, which ended in a draw at the end of regulation time. However, Ghana faltered in the penalty shootout, losing 3-4. This disappointing result contrasts with their third-place finish in the previous edition held in 2012 in Azerbaijan.
Nigeria, on the other hand, suffered a convincing defeat at the hands of Spain, with a final score of 3-0. The loss marked the end of Nigeria’s campaign in the tournament.
Zambia, the third African representative, experienced a premature exit from the competition after failing to advance past the first round.
