Women’s Africa Cup of Nations: Malawi move 3-0 ahead of Egypt in live Group match
Malawi have taken a 3-0 lead against Egypt in the second round of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, with Tuima completing the scoring after 69 minutes.
Egypt are attempting to recover from a heavy 6-0 defeat by Zambia in their opening match of the competition, but Malawi have controlled the contest after taking the lead in the first half.
Tuima found herself through on goal before calmly placing the ball into the net to extend Malawi’s advantage. The goal leaves Egypt facing another difficult result as they look for their first positive outcome of the tournament.
Malawi’s task became more complicated shortly after the restart when Rose was shown a red card in the 52nd minute. Despite being reduced to 10 players, Malawi have continued to threaten and had already created several opportunities in the second half before Tuima’s goal.
Egypt also had a dangerous opening in the 56th minute, but the chance was not converted. Malawi had seen opportunities of their own go begging in the early stages of the second half, including one in the 48th minute and another three minutes later.
Malawi doubled their lead in added time at the end of the first half. After the goalkeeper made a save, Shinzimo followed up to put the rebound into the net in the second minute of added time.
Their opening goal came in the 36th minute. Rose Smith showed good control to receive the ball before finishing past the Egypt goalkeeper.
Egypt had threatened earlier in the match. Their goalkeeper in Malawi’s goal was forced into a save from a dangerous attempt in the 19th minute, while another chance for Egypt went narrowly unfinished in the third minute after a cross was not met cleanly.
Malawi had their own chance in the 24th minute, before another effort two minutes later was cleared off the goal-line.
