Franco-Congolese international Saël Kumbedi is on the verge of joining Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg in the current summer transfer window.
The Bundesliga are executing an aggressive effort to bolster their squad for the 2025/26 football campaign as they seeks to make a meaningful impact. However, the 20-year-old has been in the books of Lyon since 2023 has emerged as a top target for the Bundesliga outfit.
According to reports, Wolfsburg are close to reaching an agreement with Lyon for a transfer fee worth €9m in the acquisition of the defender.
Kumbedi joined Les Gones three years ago from Le Havre in a €1m move and established himself as a key member of the team. His profile and his experience at such a young age have made him an attractive prospect for a handful of European clubs.
Wolfsburg’s €9m offer, which is composed of a €7m transfer fee with a further €2m in bonuses, is reportedly close to matching Lyon’s valuation of Kumbedi.
The 2022 U17 European champion with France was an unused substitute in Saturday’s 3-0 home win against Metz, as Ainsley Maitland-Niles featured on Lyon’s right defensive flank.
Despite featuring for France at the youth level, the talented defender remains eligible to represent DR Congo at the international stage.
