Winfried Schäfer has outlined the scope of his responsibilities within the Ghana Football Association, making it clear that his involvement goes far beyond the sidelines of the national team.
The veteran German coach, now serving as Ghana’s technical director, stated that his primary role is to support Black Stars head coach Otto Addo while spearheading a comprehensive reform of the nation’s footballing framework.
In a statement addressing the nature of his position, Schäfer explained:
“The president of the Federation asked me to support Otto Addo and, as director of football in Ghana, to instill a spirit of optimism while modernizing our approach to the game. My experience gained in Cameroon has given me a better understanding of the realities of the continent.”
Schäfer brings with him a wealth of experience from African football, having famously led Cameroon to the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2002 and a runner-up finish at the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2003.
His appointment by the Ghana Football Association marks a significant step toward rebuilding the country’s football identity after recent setbacks on the continental and global stage.
Though his presence may be most visible at senior national team engagements, Schäfer’s responsibilities run deeper.
His role spans the development of youth structures, the overhaul of training programs, and the creation of a unified coaching methodology to be adopted nationwide.
