Will Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang face Nigeria in World Cup play-off after red card drama?
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be available for Gabon when they face Nigeria in the upcoming World Cup qualifying play-off after serving a one-match suspension.
The French-Gabonese striker, who plies his trade with Marseille, had been a doubt following his red card during Gabon’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Gambia last week.
The former Arsenal and Chelsea forward was sent off in the 85th minute after receiving two yellow cards — one for kicking and breaking a corner flag during his goal celebration, and another for shoving Gambian defender Alagie Saine.
The dismissal overshadowed an extraordinary individual performance in which the 36-year-old scored all four of Gabon’s goals, becoming only the seventh player to achieve such a feat in CAF World Cup qualifying history.
Aubameyang served his one-game suspension during Gabon’s 2-0 victory over Burundi on Tuesday, their final qualifier before the playoff stage.
With the ban now complete, he is cleared to lead the Panthers’ attack against Nigeria in November as Gabon seek to secure their first-ever World Cup appearance.
The Marseille striker has been in sharp form this season, netting three times in five Ligue 1 appearances.
His return is a significant boost for coach Thierry Mouyouma, whose side have already made waves by qualifying for both the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup play-offs.
Speaking after his historic four-goal display against Gambia, Aubameyang reaffirmed his determination to make history with Gabon.
“We want to go to the World Cup and, to get there, we have to win games,” he said.
“I’m very motivated, and when you have the chance to go to the World Cup, you have to be even more motivated. I was effective, so I’m happy: four attempts, four goals. It was important for me to lead by example.”
With his suspension behind him, Gabon’s talisman is set to spearhead their charge against the Super Eagles — a clash that could define the nation’s footballing future.
