Cameroon’s preparation for the upcoming African Cup of Nations has taken an unusual turn, marked by challenges and uncertainties.
The absence of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, dealing with physical setbacks, coupled with François Régis Mughe’s refusal to join, citing the pursuit of playing time in Ligue 1, has added to the complexities faced by the Indomitable Lions.
Furthermore, goalkeeper André Onana’s delayed decision to join the squad stirred controversy, as he prioritized Manchester United’s matches over the national team’s preparations.
However, it’s not just the absentees that have sparked discussions. The inclusion of 17-year-old midfielder Wilfried Nathan Douala in Rigobert Song’s squad has inadvertently become a point of contention.
Douala’s surprise inclusion has raised questions not only about his true year of birth but has also brought attention to the relationship between his local club, Victoria United, and the president of the Cameroonian Federation, Mr. Samuel Eto’o Fils.
The age debate surrounding Douala intensified when his name and face were unveiled to the football world on December 28.
His robust physique, defying expectations of a more youthful player, has fueled speculation and debates across the African continent.
Age verification in football has been a persistent issue for Cameroon, underscored by the Joseph Minala controversy in 2014.
FIFA’s introduction of the “wrist examination” in 2016, involving an MRI to assess bone development and correlate it with the player’s age, aimed to address such concerns.
In January 2023, the Cameroonian federation (FECAFOOT) suspended 21 of its 30 U17 internationals, signaling a commitment to curbing age-related discrepancies.
Beyond the administrative saga, the Douala case extends into the realm of alleged favoritism. Wiretaps revealed last July suggested connections between leaders of Douala’s club, Victoria United, and Samuel Eto’o.
In these conversations, Eto’o seemingly assured the club’s president of promotion to the first division, a prediction that materialized within days with a remarkable climb from eighth place to the promotion zone.
This has triggered an investigation by CAF and FIFA, initiated by concerned Cameroonian officials. The Douala affair encapsulates the multifaceted challenges faced by Cameroon as they navigate the intricacies of AFCON preparations.
