Why the Champions League’s opening round is being played across three days

The UEFA Champions League has introduced an exception to its normal schedule, with the opening round of the league phase spread across Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The competition has used a league phase instead of a group stage for the past three seasons, bringing major changes to the way matches are organised. Traditionally, Champions League fixtures were played on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, but the first round now occupies three consecutive days.

The main reason is UEFA’s “exclusive week” concept, according to a report published by Spanish newspaper Marca on Thursday.

Under the new European competition calendar, each of the continent’s three major club tournaments is given a full week of its own. The Champions League, Europa League and UEFA Conference League therefore have separate periods in which their opening-round fixtures are played.

That arrangement prevents the Champions League’s first-round matches from being held alongside games in the other two competitions. It gives the tournament greater room for media coverage and allows fixtures to be spread across more time slots for viewers around the world.

The decision also has financial and commercial implications. Eighteen matches are being played in the opening round, and distributing them over three days reduces the number of games taking place at the same time.

As a result, supporters can watch more matches live rather than having to choose between simultaneous fixtures. The wider range of kick-off times also gives broadcasters more opportunities to use available slots, potentially increasing viewing figures and advertising income for both clubs and UEFA.

However, the three-day format will not continue throughout the league phase. After the opening round, Champions League fixtures will return to their usual Tuesday and Wednesday schedule, continuing in that format until the penultimate round of the league phase.

The second round of league-phase matches is scheduled for 13 and 14 October next, after the international break.

Thursday evenings will then return to the Europa League and UEFA Conference League. The Champions League’s use of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for its opening round is therefore a one-off arrangement linked to UEFA’s “exclusive week” model.
