Why Stellenbosch was the right choice for Rangers defender Olwethu Makhanya

Agent Nimrod Mbhalati has explained why he turned down approaches from Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates to guide Olwethu Makhanya to Stellenbosch FC.

Makhanya emerged at Marumo Gallants in 2022 and quickly became one of South Africa’s most sought-after young players. The interest from three of the country’s biggest clubs came with more lucrative offers, but Mbhalati believed Stellenbosch provided the better environment for the defender’s long-term development.

Speaking to the Siya crew, Mbhalati said the decision was based on the Cape Winelands club’s commitment to developing young players rather than the value of the initial deal.

> “The deal I did for Olwethu Makhanya. It was very difficult because he was the most wanted young kid, so big clubs offered more money, but we opted for Stellenbosch FC because of their vision and love for young players and I’m glad we did that. The proof is in how much the young man has grown,” Mbhalati said.

Rapid progress at Stellenbosch

Makhanya initially spent time in Stellenbosch FC’s DStv Diski Challenge side after joining the club. However, his progression was swift and he soon moved into the first-team set-up.

The defender spent only one season with the senior squad before earning a move to MLS club Philadelphia Union. That transfer reflected the speed of his development after arriving at Stellenbosch, where he had been given the opportunity to grow within the club’s system.

Mbhalati was still a developing agent when he made the decision to take Makhanya to Stellenbosch, rather than accept the larger financial offers available elsewhere.

International recognition and move to Rangers FC

Makhanya’s career has continued to advance since leaving South Africa. He was included in Bafana Bafana’s FIFA World Cup squad, giving him the opportunity to represent the country on the global stage.

Now managed by Centre Circle, the 22-year-old has recently completed a transfer to Rangers FC. He has since made an impression in Scottish football, continuing the upward trajectory that began after his move from Marumo Gallants to Stellenbosch.

Makhanya’s route through Marumo Gallants, Stellenbosch FC, Philadelphia Union and Rangers FC has become a notable example of the progress a young South African player can make when development is prioritised.

For Mbhalati, the defender’s career provides confirmation that choosing a club for its vision and record of working with young players can be more valuable than accepting the biggest offer at the beginning of a player’s career.
