A potential reunion between former Manchester United teammates Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood at Olympique Marseille failed to materialise this summer due to two major concerns within the French club.
Pogba, who is of Guinean heritage, had been without a club since Juventus terminated his contract in November 2024 following an 18-month doping suspension.
That ban was lifted earlier this year, paving the way for the World Cup-winning midfielder’s return to top-flight football.
Marseille reportedly considered bringing him on board, which would have reunited him with Greenwood, who spent last season on loan at the club.
However, according to The Mirror, two factors discouraged the Ligue 1 outfit from completing a deal.
First, the club already has a congested midfield roster, including experienced names such as Geoffrey Kondogbia, Adrien Rabiot, Valentin Rongier, and Bilal Nadir. Adding Pogba to that list raised concerns about available minutes and his ability to earn a starting role in an already competitive squad.
Secondly, manager Roberto De Zerbi reportedly expressed doubts about Pogba’s physical readiness after nearly two years out of regular competitive action.
The high salary demands for a player with uncertain fitness levels were considered too great a risk for the club.
While fans had hoped to see Greenwood and Pogba team up again, Pogba’s expected move to Monaco makes that unlikely—for now.
However, should Greenwood remain in France, the two may still face each other in Ligue 1 next season.
