Who will guard Chelsea’s net in Paris? Liam Rosenior faces key decision

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior faces a pivotal choice that could define his team’s Champions League campaign.

As the Blues prepare to travel to Paris for the first leg of their round of 16 tie against reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, all eyes are on who will guard the net.

Goalkeeping conundrum at the heart of Chelsea’s challenge

Chelsea arrive in France buoyed by a revitalised attacking rhythm under Rosenior, who replaced Enzo Maresca earlier this season. The Blues’ forward play has shown renewed sharpness, suggesting they could return to Stamford Bridge with a crucial advantage ahead of the second leg on March 17.

Yet, amid attacking optimism, the most pressing concern lies not at the top end of the pitch but between the posts. Rosenior must decide whether to stick with his established first-choice goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez, or turn to Filip Jorgensen, who impressed in recent appearances.

Sanchez, the £25million summer signing from Brighton, has largely enjoyed a solid season. At 28, he has maintained a clean record for errors leading directly to Premier League goals and has been a consistent presence in Chelsea’s line-up.

However, questions over his reliability surfaced during the 2-1 loss to Arsenal on March 1, when his positioning on a cross allowed Jurrien Timber to score the decisive goal.

Jorgensen stakes his claim

Just three days later, Rosenior opted for change, handing 23-year-old Filip Jorgensen his second league start of the season against Aston Villa. Jorgensen’s performance, including three key saves, helped secure a 4-1 victory and demonstrated his readiness for high-pressure matches.

Yet it may not be pure shot-stopping prowess that convinces Rosenior to make a bold switch for the Champions League encounter.

Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy has highlighted Jorgensen’s superior passing abilities, noting that his composure with the ball at the back could better support Chelsea’s attacking fluidity—a trait Rosenior has prioritised this season.

The decision over who starts in goal could be decisive as Chelsea prepare to face a PSG side brimming with attacking talent. A confident, ball-playing goalkeeper could offer Rosenior’s side an edge in building from the back, while an experienced hand like Sanchez provides reassurance in high-stakes defensive moments.
