Sunderland have completed the Premier League’s only African signing of the winter transfer window by securing the services of Ivorian winger Jocelin Ta Bi for a reported fee of €4m.
The 18-year-old right-sided attacker arrives in England with growing expectations after emerging from Jeunesse Club d’Abidjan, where he progressed through the youth ranks before breaking into the senior team at a young age.
His move stands out in a January window that saw limited African representation across Premier League clubs.
Ta Bi made his first-team debut for Jeunesse Club d’Abidjan at just 18, quickly establishing himself as a promising wide player.
His performances at domestic level were enough to attract interest from Europe, with Sunderland acting decisively to complete the transfer.
The Ivorian has signed a long-term deal with the English club, committing his future until 2030.
The agreement also includes an option for an additional year, underlining Sunderland’s belief in his long-term potential and development.
Despite the transfer being finalised, Ta Bi is not expected to feature immediately.
The winger is currently recovering from an ankle injury, meaning his Premier League debut will be delayed until he regains full fitness. Sunderland’s medical staff will oversee his rehabilitation as he adapts to his new environment.
Off the pitch, Ta Bi’s profile continues to rise.
His market value is currently estimated at €375,000, although that figure is widely expected to increase when updated by player valuation platform Transfermarkt, reflecting his move to one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.
At international level, the youngster has yet to earn a call-up to the Ivory Coast senior national team.
However, his progress has not gone unnoticed, and he is believed to be on the radar of head coach Emerse Faé as the country looks ahead to future international competitions, including World Cup qualification.
