Morocco has been confirmed as the host nation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals, following the removal of hosting rights from Guinea last year.
The decision was announced on Wednesday during a meeting of the Confederation of African Football’s executive committee in Cairo.
The North African nation secured the 2025 tournament by default after Algeria, Zambia, and a joint bid from Benin and Nigeria withdrew before the vote.
With no competing bids remaining, Morocco emerged as the sole candidate.
The victory is a significant milestone for Morocco as it strengthens their bid to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Portugal and Spain.
The 2025 edition will mark Morocco’s second time staging the continent’s flagship football event, nearly 40 years after they last hosted in 1988.
In addition, the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations hosting rights were awarded to a joint bid from Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
