'What are referees being taught?' - English-Nigerian Agbonlahor questions PGMOL over Aston Villa’s disallowed goal

Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has sharply criticised the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) over a contentious refereeing decision that affected the outcome of Villa’s recent Premier League match against Manchester United.

The former English international took aim at the officiating standards following the disallowance of a crucial Aston Villa goal during the final round, which ultimately contributed to Villa missing out on a Champions League spot.

Agbonlahor, who has Nigerian heritage, expressed his frustrations in a strongly worded letter to PGMOL and former referee Howard Webb.

The letter highlights concerns over referees’ decision-making and the quality of officiating in England’s top flight.

The incident in question involved a goal by Morgan Rogers that was ruled out for a foul on Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, despite Villa’s protests.

The disallowed goal was a pivotal moment as Villa lost 0–2 at Old Trafford, ending the season sixth and settling for Europa League qualification.

In his letter, Agbonlahor accused PGMOL of costing Aston Villa significant financial and sporting setbacks, questioning why Premier League referees do not allow play to continue in similar fashion to their assistants and calling for the recruitment of top referees from around the world.

“What are referees being taught, Howard? Can’t we go abroad and bring in the best officials? Because this is not an isolated incident,” he wrote.

He also urged for the inclusion of former players in VAR decision-making and warned against mere “pathetic apologies” as a response.

Villa plan to lodge a formal complaint with the Premier League, disputing the official’s experience and the disallowed goal, as the club looks to challenge the decision that has had significant repercussions for their European ambitions.
