West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo has conceded that his side face a difficult battle to retain their top-flight status following a damaging 3-0 loss to Brentford.

The defeat leaves the East London club precariously placed, hovering just two points above 18th-placed Tottenham Hotspur in an increasingly tense relegation fight.

With only three matches remaining, the margin for error has narrowed significantly, and results elsewhere could further complicate West Ham’s position.

Tottenham have the opportunity to climb out of the bottom three if they secure a positive result against Aston Villa, a scenario that would see them leapfrog West Ham and intensify the pressure on Nuno’s side heading into the final stretch of the campaign.

Reflecting on the setback, Nuno acknowledged the scale of the challenge ahead, particularly in the emotional aftermath of a heavy home defeat. “It’s going to be a big challenge for all of us with the impact of this tough day,” he said.

“We’ve got to look at other stadiums and see what’s going on.”

Despite the scoreline, the Portuguese manager pointed to encouraging aspects of his team’s performance, particularly in the opening half where West Ham showed attacking intent and control in phases. However, a lack of cutting edge proved costly.

“We played a very good first half,” he added.

“The way we played, the way our game flowed, even though we conceded in the first situation off a cross, a couple of times we had bad luck in the other end.”

West Ham created several openings but were unable to convert their chances, hitting the woodwork and forcing Brentford into difficult defensive situations without reward. That inefficiency ultimately shifted the momentum.

“So, we were positive in the first half, but then (after they scored) the penalty in the second half, we lost a bit of composure and organisation, and it became much harder.”

The second-half penalty compounded West Ham’s problems, disrupting their structure and allowing Brentford to take control of the contest. From there, the visitors capitalised ruthlessly, exposing defensive vulnerabilities as the hosts struggled to regain their footing.

Nuno, however, stressed the importance of unity and mental resilience as the relegation battle reaches its decisive phase.

“But that’s what I said to the boys: ‘Let’s keep together, let’s realise how we react from a bad day like today is going to keep us alive in the fight’.”
