Wesley Fofana admits Chelsea were ‘outclassed’ as PSG’s depth overwhelms Blues
Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana offered a candid assessment of his side’s Champions League struggles, admitting the Blues were simply ‘outclassed’ by reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain during their Round of 16 first-leg defeat.
Speaking in the mixed zone following a heavy 5-2 loss at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night, the Frenchman of Ivorian descent acknowledged the significant gap in quality that currently exists between the two European sides.
Fofana’s comments reflected a sense of realism regarding PSG’s dominant status in world football.
The defender specifically pointed to the tactical and physical toll the match took on the Chelsea squad. He explained that while the Blues attempted to disrupt PSG’s rhythm with a high-intensity, man-to-man pressing system, the strategy eventually led to physical exhaustion.
This fatigue proved fatal in the closing stages of the match, allowing the French champions to pull away.
“It’s nothing new. I think everyone knows it. Last year, they were European champions, and that’s not for nothing.
“They have a Ballon d’Or winner, they have Ousmane (Dembélé), who is among the best players in the world, even now, even though he’s coming back from injury. So yes, for sure, they are great players, they only have great players.”
The turning point, according to Fofana, was the introduction of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia off the bench. The Georgian international’s arrival shifted the momentum entirely, as he capitalized on Chelsea’s tired legs to score twice and seal the 5-2 scoreline.
Fofana noted that the ability to bring on a player of Kvaratskhelia’s caliber demonstrated PSG’s overwhelming depth.
“And we saw it, they bring on another great player (Kvaratskhelia). He hurt us, he scores two goals. Was it a difficult moment? Physically, we were struggling because we pressed a lot, we tried to go man-to-man throughout the match, but they are a great team. Tonight, they showed that, so hats off to them.”
