Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger has expressed delight after scoring the decisive goal in their dramatic Copa del Rey semifinal victory over Real Sociedad.
The German international of Sierra Leonean descent emphasized the team’s fighting spirit as they battled through a tough encounter to secure a place in the final with a 5-4 aggregate win.
Real Sociedad took the lead three times in the second leg, pushing the match into extra time. However, Rüdiger ensured Madrid’s progression by finding the net at a crucial moment.
Reflecting on the hard-fought match, he acknowledged the difficulty of facing La Real and praised his side’s determination.
Rüdiger credited teammate Arda Güler for providing the assist for his goal, describing it as a well-placed corner that made his job easy.
“It was a very tough game, but we came from behind again and I’m happy to score a goal. Real Sociedad played a good game and it’s always very difficult to play against this team. There are many games, but we’re Real Madrid and we always fight until the end.
“This season is difficult, but we’re in another final and we want to win it.”
On his extra-time goal, Rudiger added: “It was a very good ball from Arda (Guler) and it was very easy for me. He played in a very good corner.”
Los Blancos remain in contention for the La Liga title, sitting just three points behind leaders Barcelona. They are also preparing for a Champions League quarterfinal clash against Arsenal while aiming for their 21st Copa del Rey trophy.
Madrid will soon learn their final opponent as Barcelona face Atlético Madrid on Wednesday in the other semifinal. The tie remains balanced after an intense 4-4 draw in the first leg.
