Welbeck heads Chelsea into Carabao Cup last 32 under Alonso

Danny Welbeck scored as Chelsea beat League One side Luton to reach the last 32 of the Carabao Cup, giving Xabi Alonso a second victory since taking charge.

Chelsea had opened the new Alonso era with a 3-2 Premier League win at Fulham, but the manager made several changes for Luton’s visit. One of those brought 35-year-old striker Welbeck into the starting line-up, and he made the opportunity count.

After Luton had resisted Chelsea during the first half, Welbeck broke the deadlock early after the interval. He rose to meet a cross from Malo Gusto and directed his header into the net.

Welbeck believes his experience can be valuable in a Chelsea squad containing a large number of young players.

“I bring the average age a little bit higher!” Welbeck said.

He added: “The experience of playing games, being around loads of different dressing rooms and knowing what is a good dressing room and a bad one. Knowing what it takes to achieve something special.”

Chelsea then increased their lead when Luton defender Hakeem Odoffin turned another threatening delivery from Estevao into his own goal.

The result books Chelsea a place in the last 32, where they will play Leeds at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso also made a change in goal, handing Mike Penders his first start for Chelsea. Robert Sanchez had endured a difficult performance in the Premier League win against Fulham.

Chelsea are reportedly nearing an agreement to sign Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez, a move that could bring more experience to Alonso’s squad.

However, midfielder Enzo Fernandez was not involved amid reports linking him with a transfer to Manchester City.

Alonso has said he wants his squad to contain the correct mixture of youth and experience as he continues to shape the team.

“We want to have a complete squad in all aspects. In quality, personality, young and experienced players – so the young players get help, that they are still players to develop,” the Chelsea manager said.

“I’m happy with the energy and attitude of the players.”

The victory continued a positive start for Alonso, who began his Chelsea reign with the win at Fulham. The manager’s approach has included giving opportunities to players such as Welbeck while also considering further additions to strengthen the squad.

Fulham also progressed to the third round after defeating AFC Wimbledon 3-0.

Emile Smith Rowe and Rodrigo Muniz put Fulham in control with first-half goals. Gonzalo Garcia then completed the victory after coming off the bench, scoring for the second successive match since joining Fulham from Real Madrid.

Chelsea’s progress came despite the club making changes from the side that started against Fulham, while Luton were unable to maintain their first-half resistance after Welbeck’s breakthrough.
