Riyad Mahrez, the Algerian winger who plays for Al-Ahli Jeddah, has opened up about his bold switch to the Saudi League, admitting it was a tough call after nearly a decade in England.
The winger shared that he’s thrilled with his new chapter, embracing the passionate fans and the unexpected quality of football in the Middle East.
Mahrez said in statements published by the official website of the Saudi League: “I was honestly surprised. Our fans are loud and wonderful and always support us, and I love this passion. We will do everything in our power to have the best possible season.”
“The technical level in Saudi Arabia is the strongest in the Middle East. I did not know how close the level would be compared to Europe, but since my arrival, I have played about seven matches and I knew that the level was good and could get better. I have never experienced anything like this before.
“I love the fans here and sometimes when we play well or lose, they keep cheering us on and we really need that support, because sometimes we go through difficult periods and the fans support us during them.
“God willing, we will achieve big things together. I just ask the fans to support us and be patient a little.
“There is a lot of talent here and many of them have been attracted to develop football in the Kingdom, and this is amazing.”
