Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has revealed that he was close to signing Amad Diallo during his time as Derby County manager.
Amad has been one of the bright spots for United in a difficult season. Before suffering a serious injury last month, the Ivorian winger registered nine goals and seven assists in 35 appearances across all competitions.
The Ivorian’s performances earned him a new contract in January, extending his stay at Old Trafford until 2030.
It was initially feared that his injury would rule him out for the rest of the season. However, manager Ruben Amorim recently expressed optimism that Amad could make a late return in the final weeks of the campaign.
Speaking to club media, Rooney shared how he nearly signed Amad on loan while managing Derby. However, the deal fell through, and the forward instead joined Rangers on a six-month loan in January 2022.
“I think he’s been great,” said Rooney. “I tried to sign him for Derby, when I was at Derby, on loan. I thought I had him, really. I think it was the next day, he went to Rangers out of the blue.
“He has been fantastic, with the goals he’s scored, creativity and work-rate. He’s been a breath of fresh air and, of course, we’d like a few more players to step up.
“It’s been a difficult season, there’s no denying that, all season,” he continued.
“But the new manager has come in and I really like him. The way he handles himself and speaks with the media, he’s been really good. It’s probably more about getting through this season now and, hopefully, starting to implement his style more and getting players in to move the club forward.”
