Speculation surrounding Walid Regragui’s future with the Moroccan national team has intensified following reports in the French press linking him with a potential move to Olympique Marseille.
The Atlas Lions coach has emerged as one of the names under consideration by the French club as they search for a successor to Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi.
Marseille confirmed in the early hours of Wednesday that De Zerbi had parted ways with the club after a year and a half in charge.
With the decision made, the Ligue 1 side is keen to act swiftly in appointing a coach capable of steering the team through the remainder of the 2025/2026 season while also setting the groundwork for a longer-term sporting project.
Regragui’s situation with Morocco remains unclear in the aftermath of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which was hosted by the North African nation.
Morocco fell just short of ending a 50-year wait for continental glory, losing the final to Senegal after conceding a decisive goal in extra time in a dramatic contest.
In the days that followed the tournament, French media reports claimed that Regragui had stepped down from his role as head coach.
Those claims were later dismissed by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation in an official statement. Despite the denial, uncertainty continues to surround the coach’s position, with suggestions that he may still be weighing his options only months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
RMC added further fuel to the speculation, noting that “amid continued speculation about Regragui’s future with the Moroccan national team, he represents an option for Marseille in the post-De Zerbi era.”
The source also revealed that the Moroccan coach has backing from certain figures within the Marseille hierarchy.
However, RMC was careful to clarify that discussions remain at a very early stage. There are no advanced negotiations or formal talks between the two parties, with Regragui’s name currently included only on a shortlist of potential candidates.
Regragui is not the only African coach being considered by the French club. According to the same source, Senegalese coach Habib Baye is viewed as the leading candidate to take over, although his situation remains unresolved.
