Morocco’s national team coach, Walid Regragui, has suggested that Sofiane Boufal could make a return to the squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March, contingent on the winger’s form with his current club, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.
In an interview with the sports magazine Al Mountakhab, Regragui indicated that Boufal, who has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, could be given another opportunity to represent the national team.
However, the coach emphasized that the 31-year-old must first regain his best form at the club level to be considered for selection.
Boufal, who previously endured a challenging 2023-2024 season with Al Rayyan in Qatar, made the move to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise during the summer transfer window as a free agent.
His stint in Qatar was marred by injury woes, limiting his ability to perform consistently.
Since making his international debut in 2016, Boufal has earned 46 caps for Morocco, scoring eight goals and providing three assists.
His contribution to the national team, particularly in key fixtures, has been valuable, but his recent struggles at club level have kept him out of the squad for the past few international breaks.
Regragui’s comments suggest that Boufal’s return to the national fold hinges on his ability to regain his previous form in Belgium, where he will look to prove his fitness and consistency.
With the 2026 World Cup qualifiers looming, Morocco’s coach will be closely monitoring the winger’s progress as he aims to strengthen his squad ahead of the upcoming challenges.
