Morocco head coach Walid Regragui is reportedly set to make notable adjustments to his squad ahead of the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Niger and Tanzania on March 21 and 25.
According to Moroccan media, the expanded list of pre-selected players includes some unexpected names, with the potential return of defender Samy Mmaee and a first call-up for left-back Mahmoud Bentayg.
Samy Mmaee in line for a recall
Central defender Samy Mmaee, currently playing for Dinamo Zagreb, is among those expected to return to the national team setup.
The 28-year-old, who previously featured for Standard Liège, has been largely absent from Regragui’s plans, having been called up only once since the coach took charge in August 2022.
That solitary selection came in September 2022, but he did not make an appearance on the pitch.

With Morocco looking to strengthen their defensive options, Mmaee’s experience and club performances could earn him another opportunity to prove himself at the international level.
Bentayg under consideration for left-back role
On the left side of defense, Mahmoud Bentayg is reportedly on Regragui’s radar for a potential debut.
The 25-year-old, currently on loan at Zamalek from Saint-Étienne, has been closely monitored by the Moroccan coaching staff in recent months.
According to Winwin, a member of the national team’s management team recently contacted Bentayg, signaling serious interest in his potential inclusion.
His versatility and consistency at club level have positioned him as a contender for a role in the squad, especially as Morocco seeks a dependable alternative to first-choice right-back Noussair Mazraoui.
Regragui has already tested several options in the position, including Adam Aznou, Youssef Belammari, and Adam Masina, but appears keen to expand his choices further.
Final list yet to be confirmed
While both Mmaee and Bentayg are being considered for the upcoming fixtures, their inclusion in the final squad remains uncertain.
Regragui is expected to make his official selection in the coming days as Morocco prepares for two crucial qualifiers in their bid to secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup.
