Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has heaped praise on his players following their hard-fought 2-0 victory over Tunisia in Friday’s Maghreb derby at Fez Stadium.
Speaking during the post-match press conference, Regragui highlighted the significance of the win, especially considering the team’s depleted squad.
“I’m very pleased with the result, particularly given the challenges we faced,” he said. “We shouldn’t overlook the fact that we were missing several key players. Yet, we managed to secure the win in a style reminiscent of Tunisia’s past triumphs—one goal from a corner and another on the break in the final minutes.”
Regragui credited his substitutes for turning the tide, expressing satisfaction with the depth of his squad. “The bench made the difference today, and that’s exactly what we need as we prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations. A strong, competitive bench is essential.”
Addressing the absence of star players such as Brahim Diaz, Nayef Aguerd, and Noussair Mazraoui, Regragui explained that Diaz’s omission was precautionary and tied to an understanding with Real Madrid.
“We have a great relationship with Real Madrid, and we didn’t want to jeopardize that by risking Brahim’s involvement in this match,” he told Al-Riyadhiya TV and Kooora. “The Club World Cup is around the corner, and his club is counting on him. Thankfully, Brahim is recovering well, and we’re glad to have his support even from the sidelines.”
He drew a parallel with Abdessamad Ezzalzouli’s situation, citing his recent participation in a European final as a reason for rest. “The priority isn’t showcasing players in a friendly—it’s ensuring they’re fully fit for future challenges,” Regragui stressed.
The coach also took a moment to thank the Fez supporters for their vibrant presence, noting how the internal competition within the squad is driving players to raise their game.
“Sanady and El Kaabi are pushing En-Nesyri to give his best,” he said. “This kind of competition only strengthens the national team.”
Friday’s win marked Morocco’s 12th consecutive victory under Regragui in 2025, spanning both official and friendly matches—an impressive streak that underscores the team’s growing momentum as they gear up to chase the Africa Cup of Nations title on home soil.
