WAFU B U20 Championship: Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire battle for coveted AFCON slot

Nigeria coach Abdu Maikaba is set to reshuffle his starting line-up as the Flying Eagles seek greater defensive stability ahead of a high-stakes WAFU B U20 Championship semi-final against hosts Côte d’Ivoire on Wednesday.

The defending champions face their sternest challenge of the tournament at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, where a place in Sunday’s final and qualification for the 2027 Africa U20 Cup of Nations will both be on the line.

Maikaba’s side advanced to the last four as runners-up in Group B, but their campaign suffered a setback with a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final group match. The result not only denied Nigeria top spot but also exposed defensive weaknesses that the coach is determined to eliminate before facing the tournament hosts.

Maikaba demands defensive discipline

Speaking on Tuesday, Maikaba admitted Nigeria’s defending had fallen below the required standard, particularly after conceding two similar goals against Burkina Faso.

“We need to improve on our defensive approach to the game. Most especially in our last game, we conceded two goals from similar situations, and we are not happy about that.”

The experienced tactician revealed that his coaching staff had repeatedly worked on defending such situations during training but said lapses in concentration continued to undermine the team’s efforts.

“We have taught the players how to defend such balls. Sometimes, during the course of the game, they forget and make little mistakes which will cost us the game.”

“We will make sure that we address them very well and ensure they concentrate all through the game and do not make such silly mistakes in the semi-final stage.”

Those concerns are expected to influence Maikaba’s team selection, with changes likely as he looks to strengthen a backline that will face its toughest examination of the competition.

Hosts present Nigeria’s biggest challenge

Côte d’Ivoire have emerged as one of the standout teams at the tournament, winning every group match while scoring seven goals without conceding once.

Playing in front of home supporters, the Young Elephants will be confident of ending Nigeria’s reign as regional champions and booking their place in the final.

The fixture also renews a growing rivalry between the two West African nations.

At last year’s WAFU B Championship in Togo, Nigeria fought back from behind to beat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in the group stage. Clinton Jephta cancelled out the hosts’ opener before Kparobo Arierhi scored the winner to send the Flying Eagles into the semi-finals, where they eventually went on to lift the title.

That defeat remains fresh in Ivorian minds, giving the hosts extra motivation to gain revenge on home soil.

More than a place in the final

The stakes extend far beyond regional supremacy.

Victory will secure not only a place in Sunday’s championship match but also automatic qualification for next year’s Africa U20 Cup of Nations alongside hosts Ghana.
