Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk signing a new contract is a major boost for manager Arne Slot, according to former Reds fullback Stephen Warnock.
The Dutch centre-back extended his stay at Anfield on Thursday, following in the footsteps of star forward Mohamed Salah, who also signed a new deal earlier this week.
Warnock emphasised Van Dijk’s influence on and off the pitch, highlighting the importance of his leadership and compatibility with Slot’s playing style.
“Virgil van Dijk is more than just Liverpool’s leader on the pitch. He is also hugely important to the way they play under Arne Slot,” he said.
Van Dijk’s decision to remain with the club for another two years eases what could have been a significant challenge for Slot.
Warnock noted that the extensions for both Van Dijk and Salah signal continuity and stability at a time of change.
“That’s why it’s brilliant news for the club that he has followed Mohamed Salah and signed a new contract to keep him at Anfield for another two years,” Warnock continued.
“The pair of them are already Liverpool legends because of what they have done for the club, but they are going to be a big part of what happens next too.”
