Vinícius Junior and Kylian Mbappe’s night of football turned sour when both stars were subjected to racist abuse during Real Madrid’s victory over Real Oviedo at the Carlos Tartiere Stadium.
Spanish outlet AS reported that La Liga has opened an investigation after recordings from El Día Después captured offensive chants. At least two fans from different sections of the stadium allegedly imitated monkey sounds. The first incident happened as Vinícius and Mbappé celebrated a goal, with Mbappe kneeling while the chants echoed. Later, in the 63rd minute, when Vinícius entered the pitch, the abuse resurfaced.
The stadium hosted 29,758 spectators, and although only a handful were involved, the scenes left a sour mark. La Liga confirmed it is taking steps to identify those responsible and may involve authorities.
Spanish football has faced similar cases in recent years. Five Valladolid fans were sentenced to one year in prison for racist insults toward Vinícius, while three Real Madrid fans were arrested for abusing Lamine Yamal and Raphinha.
La Liga stressed such conduct is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
