Vinicius Junior’s position at Real Madrid is under growing pressure, with the Brazil winger struggling for form and Yann Diomande emerging as a serious alternative on the left.
Vinicius has continued to receive opportunities from manager Jose Mourinho, but his performances remain well below the level expected of a player of his ability and status. His latest display, against AEK Athens, offered little encouragement as he played the full 90 minutes without making a decisive contribution.
His return from suspension in La Liga is approaching, but his two appearances in the Champions League have done little to suggest that he is ready to reclaim his best form. Real Madrid are scheduled to face Valencia in La Liga on 07 November 2026.
The contrast with Diomande has become increasingly clear. The Ivory Coast player is enjoying an outstanding attacking spell while also working hard to support his team-mates defensively. Those are precisely the areas for which Vinicius has faced the most criticism.
Speaking in Greece, Diomande said his best position is on the left wing – the same role occupied by Vinicius. That overlap could lead to the Brazilian being left out of the starting line-up sooner than expected.
Mourinho has already solved several other issues within the side. He restored Jude Bellingham’s form, moved Fede Valverde to right-back and helped develop Diomande’s performances. Vinicius, however, remains the unresolved problem, and not because the manager has stopped believing in him.
The Brazilian has started almost every match in which he has been available this season and has spent only one game on the bench. Mourinho has deliberately handled him with care, avoiding public criticism and refusing to hold him responsible either in press conferences or on the pitch.
The manager is also mindful of the dispute between Vinicius and his predecessor, Xabi Alonso, which ultimately ended with Alonso leaving his position. Mourinho has therefore sought to manage the relationship with flexibility, regularly taking Vinicius off during matches while maintaining his backing and co-operation.
Wednesday’s match in Athens provided the clearest example. Although Vinicius was among Real Madrid’s poorest performers, Mourinho replaced Diomande instead and kept the Brazilian on the pitch, hoping he would produce a response. Supporters and journalists called for Vinicius to be withdrawn, but the Portuguese manager persisted.
Mourinho knows Real Madrid need the best version of Vinicius if they are to compete for every trophy. Yet confidence in him is beginning to run out at Santiago Bernabeu, with more people questioning whether he should remain an automatic starter after his suspension ends.
Diomande also gives the team greater balance because of the support he provides to Marc Cucurella. With Vinicius on the left, the Spanish full-back faces additional defensive demands, an issue exposed in Athens and in other matches this season.
Mourinho now faces a difficult decision. Dropping one of the club’s most famous and influential players could create tension in the dressing room and around the club, while selecting him solely because of his reputation would come at the expense of the player currently in better form.
Vinicius has previously shown he can recover from similar poor spells, but time is becoming limited. His La Liga return offers a major opportunity to remind everyone why he is regarded as one of the world’s most dangerous dribblers and match-winners. If he fails to take it, Diomande is ready to step in.
