Former Nigerian goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, has voiced his desire to step into the role of goalkeeper coach for the Super Eagles. While acknowledging that he lacks the required certification for the position, Enyeama draws inspiration from Zinedine Zidane’s coaching journey with Real Madrid, emphasizing his readiness to contribute his skills and experience to the national team.
Following the departure of José Peseiro, the Super Eagles are in the process of assembling a new coaching staff. Enyeama, who enjoyed an illustrious career with the national team, expressed his eagerness to take on the role of goalkeeper coach if the Nigerian Football Federation extends the invitation.
Despite not possessing the necessary coaching certification, Enyeama highlights the precedent set by Zinedine Zidane, who was entrusted with coaching duties at Real Madrid without prior qualifications.
In an interview with Lagos Talks, Enyeama stated, “To become a goalkeeping coach, first of all, I’m not certified yet. If they want me to be like Zidane, who was not yet certified, but Real Madrid had confidence in him, it can happen.
I have no problem if they wake up tomorrow and say, Vincent, come and be part of the team, I will gladly do it. I can never say no to my country, I have always said it.
I can never say no to Nigeria. I will bring my experience from years spent in Europe and we will do it. But they have to call me first.”
Renowned as one of the finest African goalkeepers in history, Enyeama boasts 101 caps for Nigeria.
However, his international career took a contentious turn in 2015 when he retired following a dispute with then-Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh.
Despite the earlier discord, Enyeama remains committed to contributing to Nigerian football if given the opportunity.
